Turn Your Childcare Experience into a Playwork Career
The NCFE CACHE Level 3 Award in Transition to Playwork qualification is for individuals who wish to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to work with children and young people in playwork environments. To undertake this course you need to be at least 18 years of age, have experience working in childcare or education and have a full Level 3 competency-based qualification in a relevant field. Examples of relevant areas are early years education, childcare, helping with teaching and learning, youth work, Forest Schools, residential childcare and social care for children.
This Transition to Playwork specialist qualification will enable you to learn about the ideas and concepts that support playwork. You will discover the unique playwork approach to naturally occurring, freely chosen, and self-motivated play. You will also learn about the importance of play for children’s healthy growth and happiness and how the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and General Comment No. 17 protect children’s right to play.
In this Level 3 Award, you will learn about the Playwork Principles, different types of play, the play cycle, loose parts and different types of involvement. You’ll learn how to support kids to play for themselves, do dynamic risk benefit analyses and think about how playwork is different from other ways of working with kids. You will also learn about the other duties of the playworker, such as keeping kids safe, promoting play and telling coworkers, parents, teachers and other important people about the value of play. This will help you to learn about how play-based learning can support children’s health, resilience and self-esteem.
This Level 3 Playwork qualification develops your knowledge and practical skills and so you must work or undertake a suitable practical placement throughout the course. Your grading will be based on a portfolio of evidence. Evidence can include reflective essays, work products relevant to the case and observations of children at work. It can also involve business discussions and writing tasks.
On successful completion of this course, you can progress to either the Level 3 Certificate in Playwork or the Level 3 Diploma in Playwork. After completing this course you can pursue roles such as Hospital Playwork Practitioner, Holiday Club Practitioner, After-School Club Practitioner, and Adventure Centre Practitioner.

Great for changing careers
I was an assistant teacher for ten years and wanted to switch careers to work with kids. With this Level 3 Award, I was able to build on the skills I already had while also learning new ones that made me feel ready to apply for playworker jobs.
A New Look at Game-Led Play with Kids
I grew up in a home where everything was planned and organised. This class changed the way I think about everything. I now know how to really step back and let kids play on their own. It has changed the way our after-school club works.
Helpful and adaptable study
It’s hard to study and work at the same time, but the mentor’s help was great. My examiner knew a lot about the playwork sector and gave me, useful feedback on my reflective accounts.
