2. Is a Level 4 diploma equivalent to the first year of a degree? 

A Level 4 qualification is broadly aligned with the level of study associated with the first year of a bachelor’s degree in England. However, this does not mean that every Level 4 diploma automatically gives you the same credits or guarantees entry into the second year of every degree. 

Progression depends on the specific qualification, its credits and the university’s entry requirements. GOV.UK places Level 4 qualifications below Level 5 and Level 6, with bachelor’s degrees normally at Level 6.

3. Can I progress to a top-up degree after completing a Level 5 diploma? 

You may be able to progress to a top-up degree after completing a relevant Level 5 qualification. However, progression is not automatic.

The university will consider its own entry requirements, including the qualification you have completed, the subject you studied and the relevant credits. Some pathway programmes are specifically designed to provide progression from a Level 5 qualification into the final stage of a bachelor’s degree.

For this reason, it is best to check the progression route before enrolling on your Level 5 qualification. 

4. Will a university pathway give me a bachelor’s degree?

A university pathway can lead to a bachelor’s degree, but the Level 4 and Level 5 diplomas themselves are not bachelor’s degrees. 

In England, Level 4 and Level 5 are separate qualification levels, while bachelor’s degrees are normally Level 6 qualifications.

Once you successfully meet the requirements for the final stage of the university degree, the bachelor’s degree is awarded by the university offering that degree. Your progression will depend on the specific pathway and the university’s admission requirements. 

5.  Is there a difference between pathway programs and university pathway programs? 

Yes, there can be a difference, although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

Pathway programme – a broad term for a programme designed to help learners progress to a further qualification, course, career, or level of study. It does not necessarily involve a university.  

University pathway programme – a more specific type of pathway programme designed to help learners progress into a university degree or other university-level study.
