What is Labubu?

Hey there, toy lovers and collectors with a touch of chaos!

The first time I saw that little troublemaker, I couldn’t look away. Those sharp teeth glowing eyes, and that smile that seemed to say, “Come on, you know you want to take me home.” Just like that, I was sold

Labubu isn’t your average vinyl toy—it’s become a full-on addiction. Collectors from Hong Kong to London are racing to get their hands on one before they’re all gone. And you know what? I understand why.

But what makes this small sharp-toothed rascal drive grown-ups (yep, me included) crazy? Why does each new release feel like we’re on an emotional rollercoaster? And why does my bank account take such a hit every time a new Labubu shows up?

Get ready—we’re about to jump into the crazy, fun-filled universe of Labubu – the art toy that’s winning hearts and emptying wallets all over the world.

Labubu Meaning – What’s a Labubu Anyway?

This question puzzles collectors and casual observers alike – What does “Labubu” mean? To be honest even those involved in the toy world find it hard to explain this phenomenon.

Labubu serves as both a character and a brand—but the name itself? Pure creation. It has no specific translation. Instead, it’s the playful invention of Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung showcased in his hugely popular vinyl toy series, The Monsters.

Every Labubu figure has a distinct look – soft body, vinyl face, pointed ears, large eyes, and a mischievous smile showing nine teeth. People on the internet can’t agree—are they cute or wonderfully strange? Regardless, they leave a lasting impression.

The official retailer says Labubu is “kind-hearted and always wants to help, but often accidentally achieves the opposite.” This unpredictable charm has made Labubu the standout star of several series, including Big into Energy, Have a Seat, Exciting Macaron, and Fall in Wild. But Labubu isn’t alone. The brand has created a whole world of unique companions—like tribe leader “Zimomo,” her boyfriend “Tycoco,” and their friend “Mokoko.” To the untrained eye, they may appear similar, but seasoned collectors recognise the small variances. And, thanks to Labubu’s rising popularity, these secondary characters are also flying off the shelves.

In short? Labubu may have no linguistic meaning, but it means everything in the world of designer toys.

Labubu Origin – How a Mischievous Monster Was Born

Labubu burst onto the scene in 2015, brought to life by the imaginative Hong Kong-born artist and illustrator Kasing Lung. With its long, pointed ears and a grin that’s both spooky and charming, Labubu made its first appearance in Lung’s original tale The Monsters — a whimsical world that has since enchanted audiences around the world.

Some magazines, like Tatler Asia, have referred to Labubu as an “elf,” but its true essence is a bit more complex. What’s undeniable is that Labubu springs from Lung’s rich imagination, influenced by a childhood steeped in Nordic folklore. After moving to the Netherlands at just seven years old, Lung found himself captivated by European storybooks and ancient myths—an inspiration that resonates throughout The Monsters universe.

Before Labubu came along, Lung had already made a name for himself with illustrated works like My Little Planet (2013, Taiwan) and Lizzy Wil Dansen (2014, Netherlands). However, it was in 2015 that The Monsters and its quirky characters truly came to life, with Labubu taking the lead as the very first creation.

In a recent chat with HYPEBEAST, Lung reflected on how Labubu has evolved over time:

“I feel that this character has grown with me throughout all these events,” he shared.

“In the past, I’d just thought of him as mischievous and kooky, but now I think he’s showing much calmer and amicable qualities.”

Labubu is known for its kind-hearted nature and eagerness to lend a hand—though this often leads to hilariously chaotic outcomes. And while Labubu shines as the star, it’s not alone in this adventure. The story introduces a whole tribe of imaginative beings:

Zimomo – The tribe’s leader, larger than Labubu and sporting a tail.

Yaya – A newer character named after Lung’s daughter, complete with two horns.

Tycoco – Recognisable by his skeleton head.

Spooky – Another beloved character from the expanding lineup.

In an interview with Tatler Thailand, Lung opened up about his creative process:

“Each character has its own unique function,” he mentioned. “For example, Labubu has nine teeth, Tycoco has a skeleton head, YaYa has two horns, etc.”

As for the names? Lung gives credit to his daughter for coming up with many of them. He also wanted names that are easy to say and search for online, making sure each one stands out in the bustling world of designer toys.

From picture books to cuddly monsters, Labubu’s journey showcases the magic of imagination—and the joy of crafting something truly memorable.

The Labubu Doll – Why We’re All Obsessed

It all kicked off with a fuzzy little monster attached to a backpack—and now, it’s turned into a full-blown obsession. Labubu, the quirky doll with rabbit-like ears, a bright red nose, and a row of sharp teeth, has taken TikTok, collector circles, and fashion feeds by storm. But what’s fuelling this craze? Why are so many people—especially those who once thought it was downright ugly—now eager to get their hands on one?

The Psychology of Desire

According to Jordan Conrad, a psychotherapist based in New York City at Madison Park Therapy, the secret lies in scarcity and trendiness.

“There is nothing in particular about Labubu dolls that makes them desirable, or justifies their appeal,” Conrad points out. “In fact, they actively show off how useless and ugly they are – and that is what makes them so coveted. This is a subtle technique that a lot of advertisers and brand marketers have adopted from behavioural psychology.”

Labubu’s “ugly-cute” vibe taps into a deeper emotional connection. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about having character. And when something so unique becomes hard to find, it suddenly feels like a hidden gem.

From Scepticism to Obsession

Social media has been a major player in Labubu’s rise to fame. TikTok creators have spent months showcasing their collections, transforming the doll into a must-have accessory. What started as mere curiosity quickly morphed into a frenzy, with fans hunting for rare editions and proudly displaying their treasures.

The Thrill of the Hunt

Daren Banarsë, a senior psychotherapist based in London, believes the real magic is found in the chase.

“People aren’t just buying a toy; they’re participating in a quest that feels meaningful precisely because it’s challenging. The hunt has become as important as the prize, transforming a simple retail transaction into something that feels like genuine achievement,” he explains.

It’s not about wealth—it’s about belonging. Owning a Labubu signals that you are part of a community, someone who resonates with a specific aesthetic and cultural moment.

Joy Without Justification

In a world that’s all about productivity and purpose, Labubu brings something refreshingly different—joy for the sake of joy.

“Labubus are permission to desire something simply because it brings joy, not because it serves a function,” Banarsë says. “That’s remarkably liberating when we’re constantly told to optimise and justify our choices.”

Unlike those comfort items from childhood, Labubu isn’t about emotional security—it’s about style, status, and shared excitement. Conrad views it as a fashion trend, a symbol of “If I have this, I will confer a certain status.” Sure, trends may fade, but the joy they ignite is very real.

A Symbol of Connection

Beyond the looks and rarity, Labubu stands for something deeper—community.

“In a time when many people feel isolated, finding others who understand the excitement of a rare find or the satisfaction of completing a collection provides a genuine social connection,” Banarsë notes.

So yes, Labubu might be a fuzzy little monster, but it’s also a cultural phenomenon. And if you’re fortunate enough to grab one, you’re not just buying a doll—you’re becoming part of a movement.

Labubu Price – Why My Bank Account Is Crying

Let’s dive into the numbers—and the heartbreak. In the UK, a standard Labubu blind box from Pop Mart typically costs between £13.50 and £17.50. Sounds reasonable, right? But don’t get too comfortable—because once you step into the realm of rare editions and resale prices, things can get a bit wild!

Buyer Beware – Avoid Getting Gouged

Before you dive into spending, make sure to shield yourself from knock-offs and sky-high prices. Here’s what you should always do:

  • Check out seller reviews
  • Compare prices on different platforms
  • Request proof of authenticity (because bootlegs are a real letdown)
