QTLS can be acceptable under special circumstances for technical subject teachers teaching students aged over 14, or in the case of Maths and English teachers teaching students aged over 16.

Since 2012, the UK government has recognised QTLS status as being on par with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in maintained schools. For those who hold QTLS and are also part of the SET, this acknowledgment means they can teach in schools without needing any extra training or assessments.

What is SET? 

The SET is linked to the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) and has special perks for teachers.

Who can join?

230 hours of direct instruction to 14-year-olds and above, providing them with excellent hands-on experience.

Invest a minimum of 100 hours learning your principal subject.

Your subject specialist mentor or supporter will observe you teaching two school sessions, each a minimum of 60 minutes long

Your Strategy to be Successful 

Make Your Online Portfolio: 

  • Documentation of teaching experience and reflective practice.
  • Observing teaching and maintaining records of professional development.
  • Maintaining record of current professional development and evidencing teaching competence. Engage in Professional Discussions:
  • You will have three, 30-minute discussions to discuss your portfolio, teaching practice, and QTLS practice with a Supporter.

Entry Requirements – Are You Prepared to Meet Them?

  • You should be teaching a minimum of 230 hours in the 14+ area in a six-month period, and your group should consist of at least five learners.
  • Voluntary teaching or tutoring classes are not included in this requirement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least one Level 3 subject qualification (if teaching five hours or fewer per week).
  • Minimum Level 3 qualification in all subjects taught for a minimum of five hours per week.
  • A Level 5 teaching qualification (e.g., Diploma in Education and Training, DTLLS, Cert Ed, PGCE, or Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship).
  • Membership in the SET is mandatory.
  • You will require Level 2 qualifications in Maths and in English (Level 3 if teaching Maths and/or English).
